The Latest Adventures Of MV Dirona

One great thing about being a member of the Nordhavn family is that there is always someone out there to help you when needed. The owners of MV Dirona actively record their lives on their trawler, and they recently documented helping the owners of Gray Matter. They needed help installing their crane, and their neighbors over at MV Dirona were there every step of the way.

Our next-door neighbors, Mark Mohler and Christine Guo of Nordhavn 62 Gray Matter, recently upgraded their davit to support hydraulic power-rotation. The base came off in two pieces, but is much easier to put back together at the shop. The downside is a heavy assembly: the upgraded base, with the power rotation transmission and motor, weighed just under 500 pounds. They'd need a crane to install their crane.

Three@Sea Adventures

Check out the latest from our family members- the lovely Three@Sea crew- as they travel the world. The last entry highlights their adventure to Juneau on board Three@Sea...

Three days from Ketchikan to Juneau is a pretty aggressive schedule, but I needed to get there over the weekend to accommodate a variety of constraints. As anybody who cruises knows, one of the most dangerous (or at least uncomfortable) things you can do is cruise with a fixed schedule: the weather gods will usually slap you down.

Wave Measurement Guide

How big were those waves? Knowing how to accurately measure waves on the open ocean is very important for the safety of your Nordhavn. Yet getting the actual measurement of the waves, especially in turbulent waters can be extremely difficult. This article offers an easy to follow guide on how to measure waves properly.
In a boat it’s easy to overestimate wave heights. This is because of a phenomenon discovered by William Froude in 1861. He found that, no matter how your boat is situated on a large swell, what you feel to be “straight down” is actually at right angles to the wave. So when you think you’re looking out on a level line to judge a wave, you are actually looking on an angle, distorting your judgment. The only time to make an accurate appraisal of the waves is when you are at the bottom of a trough, midway between two waves, and you are sitting relatively level.

Which U.S. Region Buys the Most Boats?

Boating has always been a popular hobby for many people. It seems that it's popularity is growing in the recent years with the average number of boaters growing consistently. This article summarizes a recent poll of boaters given across the nation and the boating trend it is creating.
About 166,800 new powerboats and sailboats were sold, with ski and wakeboard boats topping the list. Also noteworthy is that 2013 was the first time since the start of the recession in 2009 that the ratio of pre-owned to new boat sales decreased — meaning more people wanted new boats again. More than a third of American adults (about 88.5 million people) participated in recreational boating during 2013. Who spent the most to indulge the boating habit?

Tiger Beach Exploration

In efforts to collect data for the research of female tiger shark habitats, the International SeaKeepers Society has taken the yacht, Penny Mae, to Tiger Beach for exploration and discovery. Scientists are aiming to track the reproductive stages and patterns of the sharks. They wish to better understand how tourism affects the natural habitation and if additional measures of safety are necessary for the tiger sharks' preservation. Learn more in this article.
The International SeaKeepers Society takes DISCOVERY Yacht Penny Mae to Tiger Beach for a tiger shark tagging expedition. A team of researchers from the University of Miami will tag tiger sharks, take blood samples, and conduct ultra-sounds using a custom-made floating platform designed by Florida Biodiversity Institute and Dr. Neil Hammerschlag. The floating platform will be attached to the stern of Penny Mae, which will serve as the base for the expedition site and research. The newest addition to SeaKeepers DISCOVERY Yacht Fleet, Penny Mae is a 138foot long Tri-Deck motor yacht. Shark tagging provides researchers with information about habitat use by sending signals from the tags to receivers. The researchers will be retrieving receivers that were discharged in October 2013 for data analysis and will be deploying more receivers to continue monitoring.

Top 50 Ports & Marinas

Do you frequent the same ports every year or do you venture out into unknown marinas? This article highlights the 50 top yachting towns and shares details on what makes them the best. It's common to assume that the largest luxury marinas would dominate this survey but you may be surprised to learn who tops the list.
Do you like a rugged, rock-strewn shore or palm-lined coasts? A street lined with rollicking waterfront bars and seafood restaurants or one local watering hole that gets its catch of the day from its most regular customer? Is this the town you most like to sail into every summer or the one where you dropped anchor for good a long time ago? Greatness — like beauty — is in the eye of the beholder.

Aboard the "Ocean Pearl" Nordhavn 64'

Follow the adventurous excursions of Martina and Braun Jones aboard their beloved Nordhavn 64' "Ocean Pearl". Their travels have taken them across the sea and back again. This blog shares the beautiful pictures and stories they capture as they circumnavigate the world. We suggest starting off with the history of their voyages and then exploring each journey more in-depth.
The motor yacht Ocean Pearl is owned and operated by Martina and Braun Jones. She is a small boat of the 'Adventure' or 'Expedition' yacht class, designed for worldwide cruising. She was built by PAE Yacht Builders (Nordhavn) and is a model N64. She has replaced our previous boat a Nordhavn 62, named Grey Pearl which in 2011 was tragically destroyed by fire in Phuket, Thailand. This tragedy temporarily interrupted our leisurely circumnavigation of the world, which began 13 years ago.

Florida Yachts - Nordhavn 43'

Levity - Nordhavn 43'
The Nordhavn 43 is the direct result of lessons learned on that challenging and very satisfying adventure. It also represents the culmination of what 25 years of quality boat building has taught us. Unlike other boat builders, they did not set out to design a 43-foot model to fit a marketing strategy. Instead they challenged themselves to make a great boat, the Nordhavn 40, even better. Likewise, they knew that the Nordhavn 47 was already on its way to becoming one of their all time best sellers. This was simply more boat than many people wanted or could afford. A careful comparison of both the 40 and new 47 formed the design parameters for a new model. It just happened to result in a 43-foot long boat. And it just may become the most popular Nordhavn yet.

Nordhavn 50' "Boundary Waters"

BOUNDARY WATERS Nordhavn 50' was designed by Jeff Leishman, N.A. This boat is fully fitted with upgrades and amenities. From the Lugger Wing engine, V drive and 11 knots maximum speed capability, the Boundary Waters sails like a dream. This Nordhavn 50' is equipped with a 300 gallon fresh water tank and 1320 gallon fuel tank capacity. There's plenty of room on board with 2 cabins and 2 heads. Sail away on Boundary Waters Nordhavn 50'.

Climb Aboard the Emily Grace

Explore the compelling travel log of Tom, his Admiral Kim and daughter Emily, as they soon bring their six year excursion to a close. In 2008, they sold their home and set out aboard their Nordhavn 46, Emily Grace, for the adventure of a lifetime. Their travels are filled with educational stories, great adventure and heart warming encounters. Climb aboard the Emily Grace and join in the adventure at mvemilygrace.blogspot.com.
America's oldest museum happens to be The Charleston Museum right here in South Carolina. It opened in 1773, and from the beginning, displayed geological specimens from its surrounding areas. Outside there is a replica of the American Civil War H. L. Hunley submarine of the Confederate States of America. Drawing from my vast experience working at the Groton submarine factory (Ha Ha), I explained to Emily that the Hunley demonstrated the advantages and the dangers of undersea warfare. She was the first combat submarine to sink a warship, although Hunley was not completely submerged and, following her successful attack, was lost along with her crew before she could return to her base. Apparently, the bowsprit containing the explosive charge was not quite long enough!

Where Is the Istaboa?

Follow the quirky and humorous travel log of the Nordhavn 57' Istaboa. The Istaboa has logged thousands of miles in exploration. The owners don't miss a beat on the blog, keeping you updated as they skillfully balance business with pleasure. This yacht travel blog shares great pictures from each of their journeys. Read more here...
Becoming Istaboa: We happened on her for sale in Palm Beach, Fl and quickly realized, we found our boat. A 57 Nordhavn was always at the top of my list of great boats and it didn't take much poking around to see she was loaded with the right stuff as well as in good shape. We worked out our deal, took her out into 10' seas for a sea trial, took a night to think about it, and the rest is history. We now own a 57 Nordhavn. The previous owner kept a captain and mate busy on board and she was already in turn key mechanical condition. So without much fuss we loaded her up with fuel and made a run for the Abacos; then the Berrys, Eleuthera, and Cat. She ran flawlessly. After a few months of island cruising, we ran her around the Keys, across the Gulf of Mexico, and up the Tenn-Tom Waterway to Tennessee.
